Dirk Gently Book Series
Personal Project
May, 2015I'm a massive Douglas Adams fan and was deeply saddened when he passed. As an homage to one of my favourite authors I wanted to create a series of book covers for one of his lesser known works: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
what i didUsing my own photography I designed, printed and packaged a series of 3 book-jacket sleeves. The series unfortunately only had 2 complete installments, with Adams dying before he could finish his third. His third incomplete book was published as a sort of memoir, containing the incomplete chapters as well as various other unpublished writings by Adams.

The Dirk Gently books are all about idiosyncrasies. The story is drenched in metaphysics (and metaphor) and its outlandishly goofy. It was difficult for me to capture this sense of quirkiness without going over the top. I decided to use a single piece of imagery from each book as the focal point. These objects (the couch and the fridge and to some degree the fish) play important roles in each story.
I had each object bleed over the side of the book and continue on the other, however astute observers might notice that the objects have been mirrored horizontally on the back. This is to mimic the upside nature of the story and to capture a bit of Adams Monty Python style quirkiness.
